What is GBAS?

In a constantly changing reality, businesses have to understand change as well as anticipate cultural fluctuations. Embracing unpredictability and uncertainty will be essential when it comes to creating more meaningful, transformative business innovations that can make a significant difference for humanity.

“Making Conscious Futures” – the 4th Global Business Anthropology Summit (GBAS MEXICO23) is a must for anyone interested in remodelling their thinking about organisations and humankind, particularly when it comes down to getting involved in forming solutions through anthropology.

Think of GBAS MEXICO as a summit like no other. We will offer an alternative conference platform with different formats, activities and venues. A chance to come together with people from a variety of disciplines – businesses and non-profits, anthropologists, designers, engineers, and practitioners, taking the time to help one another by presenting and develop innovative approaches, leading or participating in workshops and activities which investigate organisational futures, actions, anthropological challenges, and ultimately find better ways of thinking about the future of business realities.

Mexico is known for its vibrant and innovative culture. It’s an internationally renowned center for the fusion of modern and ancient expressions of innovation, making it the perfect location for an open conversation about the future of Business Anthropology.

If you want to be a part of cutting-edge business anthropology, we invite you to submit your proposals  for our upcoming 2023 summit! There are plenty of opportunities to showcase new thinking and work. If you want to think outside the box when it comes to delivering information, we will welcome your creative input too to co-create formats and make connections.

Our Axes

Our theme conference will be organised around three axes: Awarness, Uncertainty and Connections.

Awareness

In this axis, we invite proposals that reflect on how recognizing context as a tool for change. As facilitators of change, we want to understand what tools for business engagement and inclusion you hold in your kit. What ideas can you bring with you as a means for us all to be exposed to new ways of thinking more deeply about the context in which we exist and how that can help us approach social issues from a transformational perspective? How can business anthropology help us learn about context-awareness? How can we develop and implement practices that will make us and others successful in the global economy?

Connections

Connecting is about having the sense to understand the difference. In this axis, we invite proposals that help us understand, identify, accept, and re-evaluate all the stakeholders involved in changing the present for a more conscious future. What are best practices for engaging with consumers, stakeholders, partners, etc. in business contexts? How has anthropology helped to develop active conversations with business stakeholders?

Uncertainty

Business anthropology deals with uncertainty to inspire possibilities, encourage creative responses, and foster ideation, orientation, anticipation, and interventions. We invite proposals that show how to deal with uncertainty and boost new business opportunities. How business anthropologists deal with uncertainty and offer new opportunities for change within their organization? How to manage both uncertainty and chaos to anticipate new approaches to management, better communication solutions, improved team skills, and higher standards in all areas of business? How anthropology explore and resolve uncertainty by transforming it into opportunities?

Participation Formats

In 2023, the summit will be undergoing a bit of a facelift. We want to introduce different formats that encourage active participation and engagement. We have three main social technologies for you to choose from: Thematic Discussions, Workshops and Short Impro-Narratives (LINKS) – all of which may be held during one session or across multiple sessions! Please have a look at the descriptions below, review the proposed axis (focusing on your chosen theme) and select the format(s) that best works with your topic.

Thematic Discussions

These sessions are created to encourage conversation and provide a safe space for participants to engage in informative, intellectually sound dialogue explicitly related to the relationship between business and anthropology. With our goal for this event to be about interaction and engagement, we offer two settings for your sessions: World Café and Saloons. Both are conducive environments where conversations may run free, and participants feel comfortable engaging in meaningful dialogue.

Ludic workshops

We are all homo ludens, but not everyone plays as much as they should. So challenge your fellow colleagues to expand their knowledge with some inspiring new terms and methods by using gamification or creative tools – tools which allow us to test new ways of doing business, develop greater insights into overcoming difficulties or engage with people in an entirely new way!  Are you a game-player? Do you have a creative technique that will inspire others? Then why not turn the tables by playing with your audience by sharing about the future of business or solving a complex topic?

Impro-narratives

These short presentations inspired by visual narrative and performing arts are a great opportunity to quickly communicate your ideas concerning our three main axes and attract audience attention.

If you are more of a visual than a text person, this format is meant for you. It is open for you if you want to give yourself a chance and try new ways to communicate.

The Impro-narratives format consists of a presentation of 18 slides, 20 seconds each. 6 minutes total.
